Career Development Corner with Carrie Seto #4 (20 Sep 2024)

Relocating—it’s a word that stirs a mix of excitement and trepidation. Whether you’re chasing career dreams, seeking fresh perspectives, or simply following your heart, embarking on a new journey is both exhilarating and challenging. As you consider spreading your wings, we’ve gathered some practical advice to help you navigate uncharted territories. Here are some tips for those of you who are embarking on new journeys, so let’s explore!

Research Your Destination:

Before you move, thoroughly research your destination. Understand the local culture, language, climate, cost of living, and any legal requirements (such as visas or work permits). Familiarise yourself with the neighbourhoods and amenities available.

Network with Fellow Alumni:

Leverage the CIS alumni network! As a community of over 5,000 active members, you have a valuable resource. Connect with fellow alumni who have already relocated to your destination. They can provide insights, recommendations, and perhaps even job leads. Feel free to reach out to the Alumni Office to help make connections.

Update Your Professional Profiles:

If you’re relocating for work, ensure your LinkedIn profile and other professional platforms are up-to-date. Highlight your CIS education and any relevant experiences. Networking online can lead to job opportunities.

Stay Open-Minded:

Embrace change! Relocations often come with surprises. Be open to new experiences, different foods, and diverse perspectives. It’s an opportunity for personal growth.

Financial Planning:

Create a budget. Consider expenses like housing, transportation, groceries, and leisure activities. If you’re moving for school, explore scholarship options or financial aid.

Learn the Language:

If you’re moving to a place with a different language, start learning it beforehand. Even basic phrases can make a big difference in daily interactions.

Healthcare and Insurance:

Understand the local healthcare system and ensure you have appropriate health insurance coverage. Familiarise yourself with nearby hospitals and clinics.

Stay Connected with Home:

Moving away doesn’t mean losing touch. Use technology to stay connected with family and friends. Regular video calls can ease homesickness.

Explore Your New Home:

Once you arrive, explore your surroundings. Visit local attractions, try local cuisine, and make new friends. Join clubs, attend events, and immerse yourself in the community.

Remember, each relocation is unique, and everyone’s experience varies. But with the right mindset and preparation, you’ll adapt and thrive in your new environment.

Lastly, if you have relocated, don’t forget to inform the CIS Alumni Office to keep your records up to date!
