Career Development Corner with Carrie Seto #5 (15 Nov 2024)

Navigating the professional world, whether for an internship or a full-time job, can be challenging. However, starting early and following a structured timeline can ease the process. Preparation for interviews and resume polishing should ideally begin well before graduation or summer vacations.

12-18 Months Before: This is the time to start laying the groundwork. You should begin exploring career interests and identify potential industries or roles that you are passionate about. Participating in internships, volunteer work, or part-time jobs related to your field of interest can provide valuable experience and insights. Networking is also crucial at this stage—attending career fairs (Dec 3 for those in HK), joining relevant student organisations, and connecting with professionals can open doors to future opportunities.

9-12 Months Before: With a clearer understanding of your career goals, the next step will be focusing on skill development. Taking courses that build relevant skills, obtaining certifications, and engaging in extracurricular activities can significantly enhance your resumes. It’s also a good time to create the first draft of your resume, highlighting any work experience, internships, and significant achievements.

6-9 Months Before: Gaining practical experience becomes even more critical. Securing internships or part-time jobs within your chosen field can provide hands-on experience and strengthen your resumes. During this period, you should regularly update your resume to reflect new skills and experiences. Participating in mock interviews offered by career services can also help students practice and gain confidence.

3-6 Months Before: As the target date approaches, whether it be graduation or the start of the summer, you should start applying for internships or full-time jobs. It’s essential to research companies thoroughly and tailor each job application to highlight relevant skills and experiences. Refining the resume to emphasize key achievements and tailoring it to specific job roles can make a significant difference. Preparing for interviews by researching common questions, practicing responses, and planning professional attire is also crucial.

1-3 Months Before Interviews: This is the final stretch. Students should deep dive into company research, understand job role expectations, and continue practicing interview scenarios. Ensuring that your resumes and cover letters are polished, free of errors, and tailored to each job application can enhance your chances of success. It’s also a good time to finalize interview attire and prepare questions to ask the interviewer.

Note: Hiring timeframes vary across different industries. Be sure to consult with career services or conduct your own research to ensure you don’t miss important deadlines!

We hope this will help you in landing your dream internship or job and transition smoothly into the professional world. Please stay tuned for more events from the Career Development program, including CV reviews and mock interviews!
