Hong Kong – Chinese International School (CIS) is excited to announce its selection by the Hong Kong Government to redevelop the vacant site at 9 Hau Yuen Path, adjacent to its existing campus and formerly occupied by the Hong Kong Japanese School.
This landmark achievement represents a historic moment for the School and the broader Hong Kong educational landscape. It underscores the merits of CIS’s students and alumni, the strength of its governance, leadership and faculty, the commitment of its parent body and wider community, and the force of its vision. This choice also reflects the Government’s commitment to bringing the world’s greatest talents to Hong Kong and to meeting the demand for top-notch school places which that goal entails.
Scheduled to open in August 2028, CIS’s redevelopment of the 9 Hau Yuen Path site will house students in Years 2–6, as well as permit a significant increase in the School’s overall enrolment across its expanded campus, creating opportunities for additional families to join the CIS community. In addition, the School will be extending its financial aid programme to still more young people, ensuring that promising learners from diverse backgrounds will benefit from its world-class educational offerings.
The new campus will feature ground-breaking learning spaces designed to inspire and support personalised learning, collaboration, creativity, and innovation. These include an Innovation Lab, focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and a Centre for Intercultural Understanding, which will contain a performing arts hub. Both facilities will be vibrant spaces for fostering STEM excellence, artistic expression, and intercultural dialogue of lifelong benefit to CIS students and the Hong Kong educational environment as a whole.
The proximity of the School’s new site to its current campus will optimise resources and create synergies that enhance every facet of the student learning experience. Moreover, CIS is taking proactive measures to ensure that the 9 Hau Yuen Path site will be able to accommodate its enrolment growth without disrupting traffic flows in the Braemar Hill neighbourhood, maintaining harmony with its local community.
“This redevelopment is a milestone in the history of CIS,” said Board Chairman Andrew Brandler. “It represents a chance for us to create a campus that not only embodies our school’s values, but also contributes to Hong Kong’s reputation as a global leader in education.”
“Our expansion marks a huge step forward in our efforts to prepare young people for the future,” added Head of School Sean Lynch. “By combining cutting-edge personalised learning and STEM programming with a deep focus on creativity and intercultural understanding, we are equipping students with the skills, perspectives, and sense of purpose which they need to thrive and serve the greater good.”
